We challenge you to perform at least one act of service, post a picture or video, and tag us on any of our social media pages using #usumftserve. We will be highlighting people's activities on our social media as well as here on our blog.

Zoom Recording, Upcoming Activities, and Council Position

Greetings MFTSA

Thank You:

I wanted to thank everyone who could join us through zoom on Thursday, Sept 17, for our Opening Social. Those of us in attendance learned from each other's shared experiences. It was an uplifting experience as Jessica Barbazoa left each of us feeling more grounded and hopeful about the struggles that many of us are dealing with in response to the global pandemic. For those who could not join us live, you can access the zoom recording here on the MFTSA blog

Upcoming Activities in October: Grad Schools and the Application Process

As deadlines for applying to graduate schools are fast approaching (Dec-Jan), we will be focusing on graduate school for October.

Friday, Oct 2: BYU Virtual MFT Graduate Fair information found here and Facebook event here.

Thursday, Oct 2, 6-7 pm through zoom.

https://usu-edu.zoom.us/j/97347519949?pwd=dTNZdWNFWlNxY21ucGFFYkhYdlFyUT09

Next month we will be focusing on the application process here at USU for the MFT graduate school. We will have a panel consisting of MFT professors and graduate students. We are encouraged to take some time to read through the program and application process and email your remaining questions in response to this email. You will also have an opportunity to ask questions on the night of the activity.

Opening for Council Position: VP of Marketing

We have one opening for a council position, VP of Marketing. The VP of Marketing creates digital flyers for each activity three weeks before the event and delegates to other council members how/where to advertise. The VP of Marketing works with the VP of Technology to ensure distribution to proper entities. Priority consideration will be given to those that can commit to more than one semester. This position requires someone who has experience with graphic design and programs like Adobe Photoshop. A successful candidate should be: detailed-oriented, works well on a deadline, and is skilled at collaborative work. Additional expectations include attending monthly planning meetings, participation in monthly MFTSA activities, making announcements in classrooms, and other outreach activities as needed.  Grad schools like to see extracurricular and leadership involvement like this on graduate school applications! We work hard to keep our council positive, collaborative, and communicative. If you are interested in applying for the position, please respond to this email and indicate interest. We will communicate further details to those interested.

MFTSA Fall Semester 2020 Opening Social

Welcome Back, Aggies!

Since we last met, we acknowledge that many of us have encountered daily challenges as we learn to navigate living through a global pandemic. Some of us may have lost jobs, relationships, or opportunities as a result of COVID-19. Additionally, being isolated from family and friends, health concerns, and the uncertainty that colors our everyday existence can be emotionally exhausting.  With this in mind, our opening social this coming Thursday will discuss complex grief, known as ambiguous loss. Jessica Barboza, an expert in grief and one of our MFT Ph.D. students, will be our presenter.  We would encourage you to join us for an insightful and uplifting activity.

Mock Therapy Activity Canceled

MFTSA,

In an effort to prevent COVID-19 from appearing and spreading, USU has announced that all university events on campus beginning March 12, 2020, must be canceled or postponed through April 8, 2020. In light of this announcement, the MFTSA Mock Therapy activity that was scheduled for Mar 19, 2020, has been canceled. At this time, we are uncertain if the event will be rescheduled before the end of the semester. We will keep you apprised of the details, as they become known to us. Thank you for your willingness to support us in our activity. We are saddened by this outcome but are supportive of the measures that are being taken to keep our university communities safe.

Sincerely,

MFTSA President

Healthy Relationships Activity Feb 20, 2020

We had the opportunity to hear from two of the MFT Ph.D. students Jessica Barboza and Andres Brown on how to create, improve, and foster healthy relationships. They started the night allowing those present to ask questions about the profession or schooling. One of the things brought up was how to deal with and even avoid the infamous burn-out many of those in the helping fields face. They talked about having a good support system, going to people both inside and outside the profession for help. They also talked about how it is a very individualized thing, therefore there is no one answer fits all. They also addressed how important self-care is, and that the client's problem are not your problems. So you should not take it upon yourself to literally step into their shoes.

The started off the evening by defining healthy as meaningful. They talked about how healthy is kind of loose term, but the relationships we all strive to have meaning and fulfillment.
They started with questions that prompted discussion.
  • What distinguishes a meaningful relationship from others?
  • What aspects make love so meaningful and profound?
They went over how relationships are complex things, with many influences. Most of us would agree that relationships give so much meaning to life, but they are not easy.

The talked about the first kind of relationship we experience that being between a child and a caregiver. This is called attachment. It is that bond created. It should be one filled with trust dependability, as well as safety and security. They also talked about the concept of adult attachment, these attachments are formed throughout life and help us to feel safe and give us a sense of belonging. We attune to our partner's needs through deepening bonds and connections.
Relationships require both parties to be vulnerable, it is also important to cultivate a strong base. This way both partners feel secure and trusting of the other. Attachment is an ongoing and reciprocal process, it is comprised of being attuned and then expression. Seeing the needs, then meeting those needs.
They then talked about aspects of love, there are many different kinds of love.
They shared the four types of love from C.S Lewis, using a similar diagram.

Image result for four love venn diagram lewis
  • Affection/Storge is a need-based love. Needs can be conflicting.
  • Friendship/Philia is a shared sense of ideas and interests. shared uniqueness does not have to be the same.
  • Romantic/Eros is a desire based on love and intimate connection. Giving all of one's mind, body and soul as well as past, present and future.
  • Charity/Agape is a gift based love. While the other three are reciprocal this love is not. It is service and love without expectation of return. Even when someone may be undeserving. This love also requires boundaries to be set. We can love with charity while also setting limits for inappropriate behavior.
Let us know your ideas of meaningful relationships, feel free to comment below!!
